OpenFoam v3 Mesh Generation for a circular solid disc with a turbulent flow

Hi,

I'm a beginner and tried on the tutorials on OpenFoam page. I'm in urgent need of mesh generation and running of a simulation of a solid circular disc (R=30mm) with a thickness of 6mm where the surface of the circle is normal to the flow (like an actuator disc). Using the simpleFoam and K-epsilon turbulence model I want to attempt to capture the wake of the flow behind the disc. Re = 1.22x10^5 witha 30m/s freestream velocity.

I'm a complete noob and felt helpless, even after doing the tutorials , mind = confuesed how to even just create the mesh and boundary conditions.

Hi,

For the future, your question should have probably been posted in the Running, Solving & CFD part of the forum.

Now, are you sure about the choice of turbulence model and solver? What you're describing sounds like a bluff body flow to me and for that something like LES or at lest DES would be much more applicable. Maybe it's worth to refer to the literature and see how other people have dealt with your specific problem.

As far as mesh generation goes, a disc without any holes should be fairly easy to deal with. Using unstructured or even structured meshes. Do you have access to any commercial meshers, like Pointwise, GridPRO, Hexpress etc. or do you have to stick with open-source alternatives?
