Dear Users,

I have encountered a problem with surfaceCheck utility (OpenFOAM 5.0). I use it to verify quality of surface mesh saved in a STL file and I get such output:

Quote:
Surface is not closed since not all edges connected to two faces:
connected to one face : 0
connected to >2 faces : 1
Conflicting face labels:4
Dumping conflicting face labels to "problemFaces"
Paste this into the input for surfaceSubset
I've learned from the other threads on the forum that I should expect the "problemFaces" in "triSurface" folder, but it is not there. It is nowhere in the case file. I've looked through forum to find if anyone had the same issue, but haven't found any evidence. I wondered, that maybe there is some parameter of surfaceChcek utility, which decides whether "problemFaces" file is saved to the file system, but from what I see - there is no such thing.

I've also checked that I used to have other outputs in the past, where surfaceCheck declared also other files being created. The other files (f.ex. "zone_pim_test3.vtk") were present in the file system, but "problemFaces" was always missing.

If anyone has any idea what may be the problem, I would be grateful for some help.

Best,
Olgierd

Number of unconnected parts : 2
Splitting surface into parts ...

Writing zoning to "zone_pim_test3.vtk"...

writing part 0 size 3740 to "pim_test3_0.obj"
writing part 1 size 1 to "pim_test3_1.obj"

Number of zones (connected area with consistent normal) : 2
More than one normal orientation.

Hi,

I reproduced your error, and the surfaceCheck should create a txt file at the root folder of your case.
Can't understand the reason why you have no such output, maybe try to re-install OF.
or move to the dev development branch.
I don't know how to fix this issue.

In any case if it could be of help:
generally I face the problem concerning "problemFaces" when some points of triangles on different "patches" are not matching, like the picture enclosed.
About the consistent normal, I think it fixes when you get the perfect matching for points, in any case this utility could be of help:

Code:
surfaceOrient inputFile.stl outputFile.stl '(X Y Z)'
Cheers.

Hi,

I am sorry for the delay in my reply, I got a little stuck in everyday work.
Big thanks for your answer and for your time and effort to reproduce the error.

As to the missing file problem - I still haven't found the problem, I will try to dig a little more, and I will post solution here, if I find one. If not, I will probably do what you have suggested - reinstall OF.

As to the advice about the triangles - thank you, that is what I have to focus on in the first place, to get a decent mesh so I won't have to worry about "problemFaces".

Best regards,
Olgierd
