Can't get snappyHexMesh to work properly

2 Attachment(s)
Hey all,

I've been messing around with OpenFOAM to try and simulate drag forces. I adapted the motorBike tutorial case by importing my own model. Now, I decided to start off simple by meshing a sphere, but no matter what I try, I can't seem to get a smooth mesh. I attached some photo's so you can see the results this seems to have on the simulation. So far I've tried increasing the number of maxGlobalCells to 2e7, but all that did was create more unsmooth patches on the surface (albeit smaller ones). Messing with others parameters also didn't do much. By the way, my blockMesh is 50x25x25 cells. I've attached the snappyHexMesh and surfaceFeatureExtract code below, should anyone want to take a look. I'd appreciate every little bit of help, thanks!

(My maxGlobalCells and maxLocalCells numbers are rather small here. That's because I've been messing with other parameters of snappyHexMesh and needed a slightly quicker way to check the effects of small tweaks in the code.)

you can change
Code:

includedAngle  150;
to 180.

Hi Marteen,

The maxGlobalCells parameter is meant to limit the size of your mesh. While meshing, if snappyHexMesh hits the cell number in maxGlobalCells it will stop refining to avoid exceeding the number of cells defined in maxGlobalCells.
https://www.openfoam.com/documentati...maxGlobalCells

This means snappy won't mesh your geometry properly to respect the limit defined in maxGlobalCells. If you want to get a correct mesh, you need to define the proper refinement levels in your snappyHexMesh and avoid to reach the maxGlobalCells limit.

Cheers,
Yann
