Just out of curiosity, what kind of advantages do you guys feel a windows version brings to OpenFOAM?

Personally I use a windows workstation and do all of my CFD in VBox's & mobaXterm->cluster/linux workstations. I've really never felt inconvenienced by the multi-platform aspect of my work.

I don't know. Maybe with Windows a larger audience will be drawn to OF. But in my opinion Windows and CFD do not go well together. Real simulations are run on HPCs and they have Linux. This desktop CFD stuff is for me just no real CFD.

But maybe it is the new strategy to go more for the desktop CFD market. Lately I was disappointed when I noticed that mapFields was rewritten and does not work properly anymore. The developers do not seem to think it is an issue that should be fixed:

Well, if you like running 1 million cell CFD simulations under Windows maybe the utilities to run large parallized simulations are really not that important anymore.

Thanks to the free nature of OF it is great for running super large simulations on HPCs. But if the development efforts are being shifted somewhere else then OF will loose this advantage over time.

The OpenFOAM Foundation, who manage, develop and release OpenFOAM, is not changing emphasis towards running large simulations, since we are only packaging OpenFOAM for Linux systems.

This release is intended to work in Windows 7 and 8. I have tried it in Windows 10 not able of installing it, because of some permission issues with the Windows 10 Powershell

Hi Kumar,

I also downloaded this version of OpenFOAM for Windows 7. It installed but won't open, an error from the VM and/or docker daemon saying there is "no such id: openfoam". I'm not sure what the problem is.

1. Installation was easy.

2. Windows Installation Readme needs some proofreading

3. Windows shell is really cumbersome and hard to work with

4. Seems like I can't re-compile icoFoam (Windows 7). Is compilation not supported in the windows installation? If so, why? (contract baiting?)

I can imagine it was a lot of work to put this together, at the same time I get the feeling that the only purpose of this release is to lower the barrier of entry to folks who won't take an hour or so to figure out how to perform an ubuntu live/dual boot. I'm preparing myself for the OF forums to be increasingly flooded by new windows only users.

I'm all about CFD education and fostering an environment for learning and mentoring around the forums. At the same time this release is inviting users who refuse to take the time or effort to figure out basic linux much less CFD or c++. The average CFD knowledge and experience of the OpenFOAM user community is about to decrease drastically. I'll be honest in that I believe that this Win. release is intended to do just that as a means to increase the population of potential support contract sources.

Hope I'm not being to pessimistic, I'm just trying to understand the point of this release outside of commercial motivations and its impact on the OpenFOAM community moving forward.

In order to compile you need to change in Make/files the string FOAM_LIBBIN to FOAM_USER_LIBBIN or compile using root permissions
sudo wmake

I don't think that solves kmooney's problem. His error message indicates this is trying to compile from files in a Linux filing system. So I doubt it will compile in Windows.

Good points kmooney, but I think this is more about sales of proprietary GUI, not support contracts.

I'm not new to linux/OF, but I am new to virtual machines...and I'm wondering how you went about using OpenFoam after installing it with this method. Do I double-click "boot2docker Start" or "OpenFOAM_Start"...because the former seems to load a shell for me (but when I try run OpenFOAM executables in the tutorials folder, they aren't recognised - even though I double clicked the environmental variables shortcut), but the latter says "Waiting for VM and Docker daemon to start...." and then after a while it says "Failed to start one or more containers" and then closes.

When am I supposed to open VirtualBox...or is that supposed to happen automatically?

Am I going about it the right way? Can anyone think of why my containers aren't opening? (I'm not sure, but I'm guessing "container" means a VirtualBox shell/window). A lot of these words are new to me, and I don't get it...

Also...it says in manual:

Please note
1. User Name: ofuser
2. Password : openfoam

What does this mean? When/where do I enter these credentials...argh, these Virtual machines confuse me!!! The manual appears to assume we have all worked one before!!!

I think I have it working...problem was, my environmental variables didn't set when I thought they had.

The problem there is that - irrespective if it works correctly or not - the cmd window closes immediately after setting the env variables, so you can't tell if it worked or not.

Maybe they should make it so that the windows doesn't close automatically if it doesn't work correctly, so you have time to read the error message. I had to quickly "printscrn" it before it shutdown.

For the record, it didn't work as I didn't run it as administrator. So make sure you run everything as administrator.

Then, as the instructions say, you simply double-click the "_Start" icon (you don't need virtual box or anything open) and eventually you'll be left with a terminal window with "[ofuser@boot2docker ~]$ " as your lead.

Hope that helps anyone who had a similar problem...

I'm not able to get it OF4Windows running on my Windows 7 system.

After the installation i clicked on Env-Create a shell opens and closes quickly. I dont know whats going on. When i try to start OF another shell just crashes immediatly. When i try "boot2docker.exe init" i gives me the error message: "error in run: failed to initialize machine "boot2docker-vm": exit status 1. I'm using Virtualmachine 5.

When i used VM 4 or so at some point i got the message that i have to enter a password for docker. Idk what thats supossed to mean. Using the commands "boot2docker.exe download" and "boot2docker.exe upgrade" all yield error messages for me. So i suppose it's just not happening for me.. :S

Easy would be to Uninstall all component as specified in README file and then again install it .

However If you want to find out issue

1. click on boot2docker shortcut in Desktop and then from terminal type command "docker images " . If it does not show image id and image name as of_300_rhel66 etc
It mean installation has issue.
follow following step then
i) go inside installation folder i.e /c/Program Files(x86)/ESI/OpenFOAM/3.0.0/Windows/scripts
ii) type command docker load -i of_300_rhel66.tar
it can take come time . once this is completed you can again click on shortcut OF_create_env to create container and then click on OF_start shortcut to start shell

Send error message snapshot if possible
