OpenFOAM StackExchange Site

FYI, I think it's a great idea. The review process of StackExchange could really enhance the quality of the community effort on OpenFOAM and could provide, progressively, a good reference FAQ database.

What do you think about this?

Hi Ruben,

I think it would be a good idea and improvement but we need more people (well 200 should be not too much but still we do not have even 90 and 50% of them should have a reputation of at least 100). However, if you are interested you can check out a discussion here http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...tml#post615590

Thanks for linking that thread. I think the StackExchange platform is somehow better for a certain type of FAQs, since it has an efficient way to push people to contribute with its reward system.

By the way I see your point, that is somehow shared by the people that were commenting on the area51 site, that there are not enough people for that kind of situation.

In my personal opinion, if a few FOAM user would register, it would already be in the beta phase. However it is not like that and I can not imagine that it will change. The Q&A system of this type of forum is definitely better because you avoid discussions.

There is an openFoam tag here https://scicomp.stackexchange.com/ that we can develop little by little

Keep in mind, not every OpenFOAM-related question is welcome on StackExchange. See:

I don't think that something like that will work because for such forums and activities such as Q&A you need also high educated people and experts in OpenFoam. For me there is no reason why people who voluntary support on cfd-online will also spend more additional free time to another platforms. For me the only way that makes sense in this case is to move everything from one day to the other and start again at point zero. A slow movement will not happen. And the other won't work too.

In can only speak for myself, but if there were a functioning Q&A site I would stop coming to CFDonline. I agree I wouldn't spend time on both.

In my case, I would prefer a StackExchange Site too but I don't think that in close future, something will change.

Quick notes:
  • Just a reminder, this topic was further addressed at https://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/si...ity-2-0-a.html ;)
    • As I mentioned in post #9 there, switching to Discourse seems to becoming more popular than the StackExchange format, given that Kitware is moving their system from mailing list to Discourse for all projects, e.g. ParaView, VTK, ITK, etc...
  • Foadsf has updated the FAQ entry Where can I find support or ask questions about OpenFOAM?
    • From there, I learned that there was a Discord server available :

      Discord
The OpenFOAM Discord channel can be accessed here. According to the admin the goal here is to provide a live discussion, for small questions that maybe don't deserve a new thread on the forum and obtain instant help. It is more suitable for beginners, as advanced questions may need developed answers, thus the forum.
