OpenFOAM Research Software Engineering group
After meeting at the OpenFOAM Workshop, myself and a few more people writing code that relies on OpenFOAM recently started a "Special Interests Group" to discuss anything related to software engineering practices in relation to OpenFOAM.
Short description from the webpage: "The RSE Special Interests Group aims to bring together developers of OpenFOAM and OpenFOAM-related projects. The main goal of the committee is to investigate software engineering practices that can facilitate the development of OpenFOAM and its integration with downstream and related projects, as well the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reproducible) management of community-contributed research software and data. " We have our second meeting today, 29/09/2023 at 13:00 CET (Germany), online, open to the public. Topic: "Reproducible code and cases, with examples from the OpenFOAM Journal". Anyone can just join and leave at anytime, there is no registration required, or any commitment expected. You can already vote for the next meeting date, and propose a topic here. We will be announcing some of the meetings here, but check the webpage for the latest information. |
When do you meet next time?

Our next session is currently set for December 7, 13:00-14:30 (trying a 90min session):
https://wiki.openfoam.com/Research_S...Interest_Group Our current topic is "Technical overview of regression testing frameworks and approaches, in the context of OpenFOAM", but I am waiting for some speaker confirmations before setting this in stone (edit: confirmed). |
Wonderful, thx!
Who are the speakers? On what topics? Is a password required to log-on to the website? |

The topic is "Topic: Technical overview of regression testing frameworks and approaches, in the context of OpenFOAM". We currently have one speaker (Henning S.) who will give an overview, followed by discussion (and I assume some demo). All the latest information is here: https://wiki.openfoam.com/Research_S...Interest_Group |
We meet again tomorrow at 13:00 CET, to talk about continuous integration in OpenFOAM.
Main speaker: Moritz Scwarzmeier (TU Darmstadt, Germany) - The SFB1194 approach to CI with OpenFOAM Find more details on https://wiki.openfoam.com/Research_S...ews_and_events Do you know someone that could be interested in contributing to the discussion? Please forward them the details. We need a critical mass to keep the initiative rolling in the long term! |
Next meeting: February 16, at 13:00-14:30 CET, discussing about automatic code formatting.
Read more and the latest updates on https://wiki.openfoam.com/Research_S...Interest_Group I also reached out to the clang-format community, hoping for some additional help: https://discourse.llvm.org/t/showcas...ommunity/75762 Related issue on the OpenFOAM GitLab: https://develop.openfoam.com/Develop.../-/issues/1634 |
The next session is coming up next week (Feb 16, 13:00-14:30 CET), when we want to talk about automatic code formatting: https://wiki.openfoam.com/Research_S...Interest_Group In case you want to help me prepare this talk, let me know!
You can already vote for the date of the next meeting in April, and propose a topic here, or directly to me. |
Our next session is coming up this Thursday, April 11, 13:00-14:30 CET. Learn about automatic code formatting and particular challenges in the context of OpenFOAM, discussing solutions implemented in related projects.
Besides the expected status update from the previous meeting, we will have a short talk by Gregor Olenik (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) on "Adopting modern software development practices within the NeoFOAM project".
