Dear Foamers in the Mid-Atlantic USA (PA/NY/MD/VA/WV/OH/NJ/DE/...),

The First Mid-Atlantic OpenFOAM Users Group will be held on the Penn State University Park campus on SATURDAY, March 27, 2010. Mark your calendars, and send an email to Eric Paterson (egp11@psu.edu) if you would like to be added to the list of participants, or if you have suggestions for topics of discussion. All OpenFOAM users are invited, but the intent is to make it a local meeting for those users who are within a 4-5 hr. driving distance to the Penn State campus.

As the meeting plans evolve, details will be published on the OpenFOAM WIKI http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Lo...d-Atlantic_USA and in this thread on the OpenFOAM Message Board.

Support for the meeting from the Penn State Institute of Cyber Science is gratefully acknowledged.

This User Group Meeting is not approved or endorsed by OpenCFD Limited, the producer of the OpenFOAM software and owner of the OPENFOAM® and OpenCFD® trade marks.

The plans for the Users Group Meeting are coming together, and we have a big group (~75 people) coming to Penn State. While all of the slots for technical presentations are full, it is not too late sign up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

1st Mid-Atlantic OpenFOAM Users Group Meeting

Saturday, March 27, 2010
113 IST Building, Cybertorium

8:00 - 8:30 Coffee and donuts
8:30 - 12:15 Technical presentations
12:15 - 1:15 Lunch
1:15 - 2:30 BoF Sessions
1:15 - 4:45 Tutorials

Details of the sessions, and a campus map can be obtained from: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2182201/MidA...oupMeeting.pdf

Through support from CEI (makes of Ensight visualization software), all participants will be entered into a drawing for an Apple iPad.

We look forward to kicking off the Mid-Atlantic OpenFOAM Users Group, and to seeing everyone in State College.

Dear Eric,

the agenda of the Users Group Meeting is very very interesting.

Would it be possible to receive the presentations (powerpoint or pdf files) after the Users Group Meeting ?

Best Regards,

Stephane.

Hi Stephane,

If I can find a spot to host the files, then I'll post them (given approval from the participants, of course).

Eric

No fees. Plus, the Penn State Institute for Cyberscience is covering the cost of lunch, and coffee breaks.

That's really good. Poor post-docs like myself need to keep this in mind.

The first Mid-Atlantic OF UGM was a success. We had 85 people in attendance for a 1-day Saturday meeting. The agenda included technical presentations, birds-of-a-feather discussions, very basic overview for OF novices, and presentations on both CAEDIUM and the vulashaka project (Simultaneous Neutronic, Fuel Performance, Heat And Kinetics Analysis which includes python wrappings of OF).

Courtesy of CEI (makers of Ensight CFD), Alex Rygg won the random drawing for an iPad! Woot!

The second MAOFUGM will be held in early fall at Penn State. Watch the forum and wiki for future announcements! We will plan to do more hands-on team problem solving, so make sure to have your laptop ready to go with either a full OF distribution, or a bootable USB stick.

P.S. presentations will not be posted or made available.

Hrv Jasak doing his best Fruit Fly impersonation. However, I don't think that he was successful in getting off the ground.

Audience in the PSU Cybertorium. Great Facility!

PSU Cybertorium had very nice Audio-Visual system. David Boger giving presentation on foamedOver.

Dear Foamers,

The second Users Group Meeting (Stammtisch) for the Mid-Atlantic/Midwest region of the US will be held at the University of Michigan on Saturday, October 23, 2010.

Following the great success of the first meeting, the format will be very similar with technical presentations in the morning and birds-of-a-feather sessions in the afternoon.

Please send an email to Kevin Maki (kjmaki@umich.edu) if you are interested in attending. Also, please let me know if you have any suggestions to make the meeting work best for the community. In addition, I am posting this announcement to the wiki and the extend-project portal. I will suggest that the portal be used for public comments and interaction:

1. Wiki: http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Lo...d-Atlantic_USA

2. Portal: http://www.extend-project.de/user-gr...d-atlantic-usa

Best regards,

We have determined a location for the meeting. The lectures will be held in the Boeing Auditorium of the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Building on the "North Campus" of the University of Michigan. The afternoon sessions will take place in the classrooms surrounding it.

http://www.engin.umich.edu/facilities/maps/fxb.html

As for lodging....

There is a cluster hotels right of MI-23 near Plymouth Rd. which would be very convenient to get to the meeting location, and not too far from downtown.

If you want to stay downtown, near the central part of the campus, the Campus Inn and Bell Tower Hotel are nice, but expensive.

There is also another, larger, group of hotels down State St. which would be another acceptable choice.

Parking!

Attached is a map indicating the most convenient lot (also indicated on the link for the building).

We are planning on having a get together on Friday evening (luckily?) coinciding with the NA & ME Department night out, as well as dinner and drinks on Saturday evening.
Lunch and refreshments during the day on Saturday are still being worked out.

Hi All,

The meeting is quickly approaching and we're starting to put together an agenda and presenter list. If there is anyone out there that hasn't contacted Kevin or I and would like to attend / present, please get in touch!

We will publish an agenda and presenter list early next week.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi All,

We have put together a tentative meeting agenda which is outlined below. We are still open to suggestions and comments, as well as additional presenters!

Meeting Agenda

Start End

09:00 09:20
Coffee and Donuts 09:20 09:40
Greeting and Introductions 09:40 10:00
Kevin Maki – OpenFOAM at UM 10:00 10:20
Christian Taucher – IconCFD - FOAMPro Service 10:20 10:35
Coffee Break 10:35 10:50
Greg Filip – LES Benchmarking in OpenFOAM 10:50 11:05
Dominic Piro – OpenFOAM & FSI 11:05 11:35
Bill Rosemurgy – Tutorial: Eclipse IDE & OpenFOAM 11:35 11:50
Ray Leto – OpenFOAM at TotalSim 11:50 12:00
Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) Organization 12:00 13:00
Lunch 13:00 16:00
BOF Sessions 16:00 16:45
BOF Wrap-Up 16:45 17:00
Closing & Dinner Plans
For the BOF sessions, the following topics have been suggested:
Turbomachinery
Mesh Generation & GGI
Ship Hydrodynamics

Due to the small-ish size (approx. 30 confirmed participants) we have the option of breaking up the group into smaller BOF sessions where each group would focus on their topic for the entire time or keep the group together and split up the time between all BOF topics. Again, we're open to suggestions.

Also, the location of the meeting has changed from the FXB Building to the Naval Arch. & Marine Engineering Building. The building is quite small, enter using either of the main entrances (all on the 2nd floor) and look for signs. We recommend parking in the "Yellow" Lot or the Pay Lot (which is closer to the building), both are free on the weekends. Here is a link to a Google map with everything you need to know: http://goo.gl/maps/433F

We plan on having somewhat of an organized dinner on Saturday, nothing is planned for Friday but I wouldn't mind picking a restaurant and making a reservation - just let me know.

Contact Information:
E-mail me for phone #'s @ brosemu@umich.edu

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

- Bill
