no doubt, but couldn't afford it.

Linse July 1, 2012 05:39

Indeed, Bernhard, it WAS a great thing taking part in OFW7!

Concerning the updatedes: I do not know how many are still to come, but just half an hour ago I downloaded something like 300 MB of updates for the Workshop stick... ;-)

Thanks to Timoslav and the other people working for the stick!

Can you provide the link? I am very interested in it

wyldckat July 1, 2012 09:20

Check post #10: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...tml#post362847 ... 14 posts ago ;)

The support thread for that distribution is this one: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...tribution.html

On a side-note: I'm also very curious to see the presentations... mainly the first one by H. Jasak :)
Will 2.0-ext not be far away? What happened to the purely native Windows build of the 1.6-ext that has been talked about for ages now? What are the efforts of getting "*-ext" code into the Foundation's official code?

Best regards,
Bruno

antoniofct July 1, 2012 10:15

Bruno,

What I am interested are the presentations and not the usb stick.

Thanks anyway

( by the way, are you portuguese?and if so, do you work with openfoam in lisbon in a college or something? I find no CFD in Portugal apart from academic, not to mention OF)

Antonio

Dear FOAMers,
Dear OFW7 attendees:

THANK YOU! We have had a great time hosting you! We hope you have had a safe trip home! Thanks for all your contributions which have made the 7th OpenFOAM® Workshop a great success.

Of course, we will have a few follow-ups (also on the workshop material: training material, slides of technical sessions and the book-of-abstracts). Up to now, we have received about 50%. We are on it: a call follows asap and we will be back to you soon.

Yours,
The Local OpenFOAM® Workshop Committee

I stand very much corrected! So this was the update Linse wrote about!

Dear Bruno,

I can tell you from Hrv´s "a year in review" presentation, that not the near future release of OF2.0-ext nor the Windows Port was part of that presentation. But that engys is about to present HELYX a OpenSource Gui for SnappyHexMesh (at the moment just the SF account seems to exist) coming in three flavors 1)OS without support, 2) Commercial support (about 11000€ per year with support and best practice guides etc.=> Big competitor to ICON´s Foampro 3) ELEMENTS optimized from automotive aerodynamists workflow. Do not know what price they think about. But HELYX will have an big impact of the preprocessing experience with SHM for a wide user base, and might have an impact on the acceptance working with OF in general.
=> Next years OF-workshop will be in South Korea located in Seoul.

As Hrv did not say a word on "native Windows port", I asked Hrv if it was dead, and he said no the job porting via cmake it is just accomplished and to many things on his work desk.(Just like the long mentioned "Immersed Boundary Method" that is available since this years workshop => ZeljkoTukovic and mentioned a long time ago)

Also on the Extend Project´s presentation there was the question why no new names appear only the usual suspects. That the lack of new helping hands prevents the new OF2-ext from appearing because there is no one that fills the gap of Oliver Borm and builds Debian binary packages (just an example).

Ulrich Heck did also a nice presentation about your baby Bruno blueCAPE. He had to speak very fast to meet the timelimit for presentations ;-), but he did well

There was also a booth from ESI and they announce an foampro competitor as well.

Your last question about getting Extend Code into Foundation Code, I can say that there was the desire from the Extend Project to have a closer contact with the Foundation. It would have been nice if someone from the Foundation would have visited the workshop to exchange some thoughts etc. but no one seems to have contact to the Foundation although there have been some attemps in the past from the EXT people.

Maybe it is a good sign (friendly coexistance) that the usual new release from OpenCFD/SGI did not take place at the end of the workshop and that they do their usual business at SGI.

Summa summarum of the Workshop: OpenFoam on the GPU is a hot topic for many players in the OF-world. We have many players in the training area now (in Germany) available Gcompute&wikki, move-csc, DHCAE etc. Many consulting companies can support OF development in a wide area. More Gui´s will make the user experience more pleasent for the comand line agnostics

wyldckat July 3, 2012 04:34

Dear Elvis,

Many many thanks for the summary!

MMmm.... I'm not sure, but isn't there a forum group at http://www.extend-project.de/ dedicated to these tasks at hand? It might be easier to help if there is a task list, similarly to the coding summer schools that are popping out every year...

Just to be clear:
  • the name of the product/service is blueCFD ;)
  • blueCAPE is the name of the company :)
Mmmm... gotta make a big banner and/or button with the name "blueCFD" on the blueCAPE website, so people don't confuse the names anymore :D

Many thanks once again! Best regards,
Bruno

Elvis,
Thanks for this very informative post.

elvis July 3, 2012 09:08

Hi Bruno,

I agree there is a communication problem in my eyes. Much happens on email-discussions that you only hear about on OF-workshop or on the come together like the German "Stammtisch".

For students there is the Chalmers Course by Håkan Nilsson as a first step to get in touch with OF, and there are "two" Summer schools (in Zagreb and the newest in Brasil) for the high level teaching of OF.

presentation material

Hello organizers,

Congratulations for the 7th edition. I hope I will be in the next.

Is the presentation material available for download?
Please, can someone give a link?

Regards,

aerothermal

Short answer: AFAIK, not all are available.
Long answer: Start reading from post #26. ;)

aerothermal July 3, 2012 17:53

Yes, I saw it after...

The only link that I found is still incomplete, has codes but not most presentations yet.

Follow-Up
Final Presentations & Download Instructions

Dear FOAMers,
Dear OFW7 attendees:

THANK YOU AGAIN! The Mathematical Modeling and Analysis (MMA) Group at the Center of Smart Interfaces (TU Darmstadt) has had a great time organizing the 7th OpenFOAM Workshop and hosting you! We hope you have had a safe trip home from Darmstadt! Thanks for all your contributions which have made the 7th OpenFOAM® Workshop a great success. Also thanks for all positive feedback we got so far -- it is very much appreciated!

With this notification we would like to call for all presentation slides and posters having been presented at the Technical and Poster Sessions of the 7th OpenFOAM Workshop. Please upload your slides using our upload form:

http://www.extend-project.de/ofw7-uploads

Note that you need to login first.

The convention for naming the final files for public download is Final-FirstnameLastnameSlidesOFW7.xxx resp. Final-FirstnameLastnamePosterOFW7.xxx with xxx being either a ppt/pptx (MS Power Point) or pdf (Adobe). Note that we will not use any document not following this name convention or being in an other format than stated above. Please think about using embedded animations, e.g., use the animate or media9 package for pdf from LaTeX. Alternatively, to the above (elegant) approach, you can also provide a zip or tgz file, which MUST FOLLOW THE SAME NAME CONVENTION: Final-FirstnameLastnameSlidesOFW7.tgz or Final-FirstnameLastnameSlidesOFW7.zip.

Deadline for all uploads will be 2 week after the workshop closing, that is Friday 13, 12:00 (high noon) - What a great deadline! Up to now, we have received ~50% of the workshop presentation slides. Please make sure that your slides are named properly such that we can provide them to the public using scripts.

P.S.: Also I am very happy receiving any pictures you have taken during the workshop. Please send them to me: marschall@csi.tu-darmstadt.de. THANKS!

P.P.S.: Please note that the server 'MERIDA' targeted in all scripts has been TEMPORARILY used for the workshop ONLY. We will provide an updated script and an updated ISO asap. However, meanwhile all updates from merida will work. I am also attaching the updated download script pointing to the final data location.

Yours,
The Local OpenFOAM® Workshop Committee
Holger Marschall - ofw7@openfoamworkshop.org

The core team (Kathrin Kissling, Kerstin Schmitt, Tomislav Maric and me) wishes you further success in FOAMing and hopes to see you soon on community events (not necessarily organized by us in near future). ;)

elvis July 11, 2012 03:41

Thank you for the wonderful Workshop in Darmstadt,

however I wonder why the Presentation OpenFOAM® - A year in review by Hrv Jasak is not in the download available, because that is what many want to read.

Dear organizers,

Congratulations for the organization of the 7th edition.

I download the available presentations, but is it normal that the training presentations aren't included ?

Thanks.
Best Regards.

some archive files are broken

Dear organizers,

I've download some presentation archives, but these were broken.
Would you please mend these archives?
Or please upload original pdf files instead of tgz archives.

Best Regards.
