I have been looking through your vtkFoamReader and I located from which result file you are gathering the patch information, "boundary", but I cant seem to locate how you are acquiring the information for the internal mesh. Would you be willing to point me in the direction of that file(s)?

points : coordinates of vertices
faces : vertices per face
owner/neighbour: neighbouring cell per face
boundary : slices of face list

See section 6 of the manual (though that still refers to a 'cells' file which is the inverse of the owner/neighbour)

thanks alot. yeah i saw that cell file in the manual and was a little confused that I couldnt find it in any of the tutorials.

Since there is no longer a cells file there seems to be no more specification of the cell type. Does thie mean you have switched to having all polyhedrons? If not where are the cell types located? or do I have to derive them from the data?

Yes, we have switched to polyhedra in about 1998 :-) The cells file just used to list the cell faces without reference to cell type. Now the output format has been changed to write the owne and neighbour for all faces instead, which is the same thing.

I guess I should clarify. The cell types listed in your document are still used, correct? hex,wedge,prism,pyramid,tet,tet-wedge?

I thought a dodecahedron is a polyhedron (it is), which rather answers your question. OpenFOAM mesh classes support arbitrary polyhedral including the ones you mention.

How can I produce a mesh with dodecahedrons with the blockMesh utility? Or do I need an external mesh generator?

blockMesh will only do hexes and some pyramids etc for you - in order to create dodecahedra, you can either use polyDualMesh (Mattijs can tell you more) or use an external mesh generator.
