Kate, Since you didn't specify exactly what you're trying to do, here are some things to look try:
1. In the Cavity tutorial, you look at pressure contours by moving to the time of interest then in the active variable controls, you select 'color by p'. There are two choices - the cube icon gives one value per cell and the circle icon interpolates pressure values.
2. Make a slice through your domain and use the contour tool (the half dome icon or Filters-Common-Contour from the drop down menus). You will need to click 'New Range' in the object inspector to define a range (or set your own range by adding values). The display tab will let you change the color scheme 'color by.'
3. There is a user guide for ParaView at their website www.paraview.org/files/v1.6/ParaViewUsersGuide.PDF. Some features are explained better than others - the tutorials at the end are well written. You need to download the dataset for the tutorials from the same website.
Good luck, Alan

Thanks alot for your help, I will have a look at the attached file,
actually my question seems to be basic, I want a contour plot for data formatted as a VTK format as in the attached file. I was successful to upload my data file in paraview, I pressed accept buttom, but it does not show any plot, how can I change the setting for the parameters to suit my data file . which options should I follow to see the plot.

tha data is points x, y generated as a triangular mesh, I need to plot it againest the value of the solution at this point, it may be helpful if you could look at the attached file and try with it.

will I be able to save image in the dispaly area as eps or ps file?? because in the user guide it says
Supported image file formats are Windows Bitmap (*.bmp),
JPEG (*.jpg), PNG (*.png), binary PPM (*.ppm), and TIFF (*.tif).

looking for your help

Which version of paraview are you using? On ParaView 3.6.1, select Open from the File menu, select the file on your system, and click Apply. Nothing else to it.

thanks, now I am able to plot my data using paraview 3.6.2 on a unix platform, just a small question, how can I sav ethe plot in the display area as eps or ps file , actaully I followed the steps mentioned in the userguide
PHP Code:

  11 Copy and Print
11.1 Overview
Depending on which platform you are using
ParaView may include a copy image
operation
and printing functionalityThe copy image option is supported only on the
Windows platform
Printing is fully supported on WindowsOn Linux Unixthe print
functionality will generate a postscript file that you must send to your printer.

On Linux Unix a file saving dialog will pop up allowing you to specify the
location
and name of a postscript file into which the image will be writtenOn Linux /
Unix you will have to send this image to the printer

the problem I could not find the print option under the file menu.
