Hi Foamers,
First of all, it is a pleasure being part of this community.

My name is Albert and I am part of the aerodyamic team in a formula student car. So far, we were simulating with Ansys k-omega and now we are starting with OpenFoam.

We are using the same model of turbulence, and the cd and cl are very similars but the PitchMoment is very different . Anybody has any idea of what is hapenning? The origin in both cases is located in the same place.

Thank you very much,

Albert

Hi Albert,

I think it could help you if you divide your car into multiple parts and compare forces on each part to look for any differences. For instance if you have a front wing assembly check wat both softwares are giving for lift and drag values on the front wings. Same for tires, ground plane, rear wing etc.

Or you can have a look at the pressure distribution on the entire car and see if you can spot any differences.

Finally the best would be to have an experiment to compare both simulations with, maybe from an older car? I think this is all about validating your simulations.

Looking at forces and moments is an indication, but it may well be that you simulations just are off in two different areas and happen to cancel out errors in forces, but not in moments. So if you can compare with pressure distributions or flow visualisations that can give you an idea what is wrong and what is right.

Regards,
Tom
