cellZone-cellSet

what is the differance between cellZone and cellSet ?

Hi alyucel

I guess its some version related circumstance that both - sets and zones - are used in OpenFOAM. I could not find any difference except, that some tools like foamToVTK only use sets and some tools like splitMeshRegion utilize zones. You can convert sets to zones and vice versa with topoSet.
However, if I am wrong or my answer is not the full truth, I would be glad to hear your thoughts on that.

Cheers

Fabian

Greetings to all!

I tried searching where I've written about this in the past, but haven't found it.

Essentially:
  1. point/face/cellSet's provide a named list of point/face/cell indexes. Essentially it's just the result of a selection of points/faces/cells, so that you can then do something with them, since you know which ones you want. Usually these sets are used for data sampling and for creating zones.
  2. Zones are an extension to the sets, since zones provide additional information useful for mesh manipulation. Zones are commonly used for MRF, baffles, dynamic meshes, porous mediums and other features available through "fvOptions".
  3. Sets can be used to create Zones (the opposite also works).
Best regards,
Bruno

Hi Bruno,

i think also that fields value (U, p, T,...), and properties (K, DT,...) could be set to zones but not to sets. am i right?

thanks,
Ahmed
