This can probably be done in post-processing also. But I think creating the patch in pre-processing should reduce the work-steps needed to get values out afterwards.
So I basically have a domain with internal and external flow. I'm trying to get a patch placed in the internal flow section, to be able to get the massflow through the internal section. I want to run several of these with varying geometry, and plot trendlines in relation to the geometry.

At the moment I'm outputting a CAD geometry from solidworks with a .stl file. Then snappyHexMesh:ing to get the domain in one go. (outer bounds is just a simple square)
But I've never seen this type of data extraction used before.

Is there any way to create a patch at a arbitrary place, and have snappyHexMesh fit the mesh to the patch?

Yes, you can make them faceZones. I would suggest some searching for "snappyHexMesh faceZones" to give some ideas.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Tom!
I found some threads about using faceZones from setSet and topoSet. And they seem to be exactly what I need.

However, I haven't been able to find any good basic example of how to actually do this. You wouldn't happen to have a link or a short simple description handy?

Hi,

The excellent collection of tutorials of Tobi comes to mind. His setset part on the website may be of help?

I did not check it myself, but from the description it looks like it will cover many topics, amongst which probably yours.

Regards,
Tom
