In 0/alpha.air, the inlet gas fraction is set to a fixed value of 0.5.
Is this value chosen independently from the other simulation parameters? Or is it related to some other constant, say U.air?

No sure what is your question, but I will try and please let me know if I hit it.

alpha.air is the concentration of the air on the inlet. The rest is the water as a carrying liquid to the air bubbles. U.air is a velocity at inlet. You do not need to multiply it by the alpha.air to get the bubble velocity.
