How to understand the GeometricOneField class?

Dear FOAMers,
Recently I want reading the code of interFOAM and in particular to modify the turbulence model for it. But I really don't understand why interFoam use an alphaField type of GeometricOneField, which seems to only have the value 1. Also, I checked the codes for class GeometricOneField and its parrent class One, it seems there's no operation reloading of plus(+) and (-). So if I want to do some calculation of alpha (interFoam), I always failed. Can someone give me some guidance or refferences?:)
