Hello,
i just started to use OpenFOAM and want to calculate a ducted fan. So basically a duct (tube) with a rotor on the middle. I saw that there is a new function in the new OpenFOAM Version 2.2.0 which seems to be what i need:

Code:
rotorDiskSource — detailed momentum source for rotor blades,       including effects of blade geometry;
http://www.openfoam.org/version2.2.0/fvOptions.php

I don't want to calculate the rotors performance but concentrate on the duct geometry. So simulating the rotor as a disc would be perfect. But how can i use this new function. All i've done so far is creating a duct with SolidWorks and using snappyHexMesh to create a mesh, but obviously without the rotor.

I wans't able to find any documentation of the rotorDiskSource function, so as a beginner i really have no clue how to use it. ;(

Can someone give me a hint or help me?

Thanks a lot in advance
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
I have never used the rotorDiskSource, but I would suggest to take a look at the header file:
openfoam220/src/fvOptions/sources/derived/rotorDiskSource/rotorDiskSource.H

There you will find an example about its usage. If your main interest is the duct and not the rotor (as you say), maybe you want to consider the actuationDiskSource, which requires less input data.

Good luck
Ivan

Hi,
thanks a lot for your reply. You are right, the Rotor is quite irrelevant. Do you have an example on how to use the actuator actuationDiskSource?

I'm a bit stuck atm, so an easier method to simulate the duct performance would be great

Thanks again
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
there is a tutorial for the actuationDiskSource applied to the simulation of wind turbines. You can check it in tutorials/incompressible/simpleFoam/turbineSiting

Greetings
Ivan
