3D dambreak

Hi all
I am trying to simulate a 3D dambreak case in intterFoam, its the first time am trying 3D.
I don't understand how to mesh the water column in 3D for dambreak. When I tried with setting the 'setFieldsDict' similar to 2D case, my red surface representing water is seem to move with in that column only and not in the horizontal direction as it usually happens.
Can any one kindly suggest how to simulate the water column.
Any help will be a great privilege.

Thanks in advance
regards

Hi,

I'm sort of having a similar problem. I am simulating a spillway and my water column is stuck in the beginning of the slope.
I would be very thankful if u could inform me if u solve urs and, of course, i'll let u know when i solved mine.

Sir Wokl,
I am stuck with it right now, but once I get some hint, for sure I will post it here.

I think the best you can do to get help is to attach your case and/or pictures.
It is rather difficult to understand what the problem is with the current description.

Hi Sujatha,

have you changed the direction of gravity? You can find it in ./constant/g

Best,

Pablo

hey,

i cant tell if i figured it out now but it seems to get better :)

my problem at first was, that i needed a reservoir (rather large) filled with water. guess this depends on ur geometry and what ur planning to simulate. If u don't have an inlet and just observing the coloumn of water breaking, i guess u won't need one. If u have an outlet for water and air, depending on ur boundary condition, the outlet should be in the negative quadrant of x-coordinate. if just air flows out through the atmosphere u can ignore that as well.

double checking the direction of gravity is also very useful :)

good luck
christian

i will let u know if i solved my problem

You don't need to mesh the water column. I have extended the 2D dam break case into 3D for my own purposes. Simply add control volumes in the 3rd dimension and add wall boundary conditions where there were previously "empty" boundary conditions. Also, you will need to modify the setFieldsDict to make sure the size of the water column in the 3rd dimension is large enough. I also found that a lower Courant number helped with convergence of the 3D case.

Thanks a million, sir Startingwith CFD, sir Phicau, sir Cdegroot and sir Wokl, for your kind responses.
My problem was with the direction of 'g', I changed it corresponding to my axes and now its working:D. 'g' has to be in the vertical direction, but by mistake I had placed it in the third direction.

Thank you all again
