Hi all,

My research is regarding collision of a particle into a droplet. A water droplet is falling by gravity and solid particle is shot toward that to hit the drop. Collision outcome is a conic liquid filmwhich forms like a liquid skirt for particle (lamella).

I need to simulate this phenomenon and compare the results with what I get from experiments. However, I need first to choose the most suitable simulation software capable of considering the followings:

- Particle motion in air and in droplet
- Particle-droplet interface during penetration of particle into droplet
- Effect of contact angle of liquid on particle surface

It'd be very kind of you if let me know whether OpenFoam is an appropriate choice for this problem or better to use another software/code for such a collision (Fluent, Comsol, Gerise, etc.)

Thanks for your help.

You might find that using OpenFOAM for your problem may require substantial effort, with a usable result being months down the line.

I found the Blender Molecular Dynamics add-on to give some interesting results for particle interaction. Although not accurate, somewhat useful information can be obtained within a week.

Thanks Nicholas for your comments.

What do you think about Gerris flow solver?
It's said to be the most accurate VOF solver available and I know that it is powerful specially for solving multiphase flows and droplet interactions, but I have some concerns about whether it is able to simulate interfacial forces between solid and liquid while particle is penetrating into droplet?

Please let me know.
Thanks in advance!

well both gerris and OpenFOAM (interFoam) only consider interface tracking part (VOF). OpenFOAM has a solver call DPMFoam to simulate particle tracking but you need to develop your own solver to accept the above criteria.
I made a solver to consider particle tracking in two phase flow but it does not considers:
1- reaction between particle and interface
2- effect of contact angle on particles
