Default Timestep Discontinuity residuals, what are they?

ss32 is on a distinguished road
I've run into floating point errors a few times now when the timestep continuity residuals get bigger and bigger until they hit infinity/nan and the solver self destructs. What exactly are they, and what can I do to prevent the residuals stopping the case?
