Hi all,

people in my company are asking me if OF is capable of solving physics with combustion problems.

Combustion problems we would like to solve, concern combustion of solid pellets in stoves.

How is it possible to simulate the flame by considering & not considering the combustion process?
How would you simulate the combustion of the solid (rate of burning)?
I mean, is there a way to analyze the dynamics and eventually the composition of the exhaust by using a simpler method (heat generation in the volume of the combustion chamber) and eventually considering the chemical species involved?

thanks a lot for any help.

Regards.

Dear Michele,

I was dealing with biomass combustion using openfoam and the flamelet model. However, the model is simple and has its limit but during the time I realized that the CRECK Modeling group is working on that topic. I recommend to check out their work. If I remember correctly, they did model somehow pallets and the gas that is produced while having understochiometric conditions.

Good luck.

Dear Tobi,

indeed, CRECK group might be what we're looking for.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

For combustion of solid in open foam. You can give material properties for solid fuel based on ultimate and proximate analysis. Refer CFD Flow Engineering page for turbulent combustion model in Openfoam (CFD solver) : https://cfdflowengineering.com/turbu...se-combustion/

Select mixture model for coal volatile and particle model (DPM) multiphase model
https://cfdflowengineering.com/turbu...se-combustion/

Define particle size and flow rate of coal in o folder of case set up
