Droplets rebound or stick

Hi all,
I am looking for a way for parcels from a kinematic cloud to either stick or rebound from a particular wall patch. It looks like I can only select either of the two for one patch. I am trying to model spray painting, where depending on the momentum and the angle of incidence of a droplet, it may stick to the surface or rebound. We are trying to investigate how these rebounding droplets may be transported with the wind into the environment. I could find something about surfaceFilms, where droplets may be taken into the surfaceFilm and the surfaceFilm can also generate droplets to put back into the domain, however this would be too elaborate since we want to investigate many different spray locations and wind directions in a rather large domain, so prefer to stick to the icoUncoupledKinematicCloud functionObject for OpenFoam version 5.x. where we can include many more sprays in one simulation. I hope someone has a suggestion? Regards, Tom |

Goede morgen Tom. As far as I know this is currently not possible in OpenFOAM, and I don't know of any community contributions either, so you will have to program this yourself. Even neglecting sticking the coefficient of restitution should be dependent on angle of incidence, so it would be a nice feature to have. I will gladly review code if you'd like to develop something openly :-)

Goedemorgen Anton,
Thanks for the fast response, I will have to see if there is any budget available for this within the project, but I am rather pessimistic about this. Probably we will revert to an alternative approximate droplet source. Best Regards, Tom |

By the way, I think the necessary changes are not to complicated fortunately (though I understand your constraints): Build on StandardWallInteraction.H, use the already present velocity vector to determine angle of incidence and momentum, and replace the constant coefficient of restitution with your case-dependent behaviour.

Hi Anton,
Thank you for the hint on the way to proceed, it resulted in that I think I have something that I can use. Unfortunately I had some issues with the whole template system, which means some solvers failed to compile after I made the changes, admittedly in a rather dirty fashion. We will have an internal discussion next week about the way we will use the code and see if we can manage to clean it up a bit to not mess up other areas. Enjoy your weekend! Regards, Tom |
