chtMultiRegionFoam in Simple mode crashes even with no Heat Transfer!

chtMultiRegionFoam when operated in Simple (steady state) mode is found to crash after a few iterations. This is noticed even when there is absolutely no heat transfer (keeping everything isothermal) - using OpenFOAM v8.
The attached 2D case illustrates this problem. It is a simple case of water flowing at high velocity through a narrow channel above a copper plate which is heated from below. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bf3...ew?usp=sharing The case crashes after just 3 iterations with the message (crash report attached): --> FOAM FATAL ERROR: Negative initial temperature T0: -302.788 The case used to run perfectly fine with OF v6.
