Series or parallel?

I am new to OpenFOAM and I have been asked whether OpenFOAM, more specifically foam-extend 4.0 and solids4foam are either series or parallel.



I am not sure as to what is being asked in that question, could someone please help me and tell me what this question means and what the answer is?
