The reason could be that when your inlet becomes an outlet, the boundary conditions are unphysical.

Try using inletOutlet and outletInlet. I don't know the details, but some messages in this forum discuss examples of their usage.

I overlooked that you need a time varying "inlet". Maybe you have to derive a new bc to combine the outletInlet and timevaryinguniformfixedvalue properties.
