Is OpenFOAM a useful tool for FEA and are the results accurate when used to analyse stress's in 2D geometries?
Also, how does it compare to other commercial software such as ANSYS for FEA? |

Hi,
Without knowing what you mean by FEA, I suppose that the following thread will answer at least some of your questions: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...am-extend.html Kind regards Niels

Thank you for the reply Niels.
I have previously been using Autodesk Inventor for basic stress analysis and it was very simple, basic mesh and go type simulations however when I saw OpenFOAM I saw that it was far more complicated and just wondered if this resulted in the more accurate results from the simulations, I just want to compare the two software and see if OpenFOAM is worth spending the time to learn and use and if so, how does it compare with other software such as ANSYS. Also, I noticed there is a lot more math involved with OpenFOAM than any other FEA software I have used, I know an understanding of the problem is necessary so that hand calculations can be done to confirm the results but do I required all of the matrix algebra? Hi,
http://openfoam-extend.sourceforge.n...7_Program.html =>Technical Sessions (Solid & Crack Mechanics) http://sourceforge.net/projects/open...iff_slides.pdf there are several guy from "University College Dublin" => Prof A. Ivanković group that do research on FVM-based mechanics also they do validation ;-) of course => read the presentations on the previous OF workshops from the Dublin guys and you get a feeling |
