Possible to simulate a working Centrifugal Compressor for jet engine on OpenFOAM?

Hello everyone,

First of all I want to tell everyone that I am new to OpenFOAM. I have used Ansys before but not OpenFOAM. i have been reading up the tutorials for OpenFOAM for last couple of days, but I cant find anywhere where it says anything about spinning/swirls flow analysis.

I am trying to perform a CFD analysis on Centrifugal Compressor of mini jet engine. I want to verify total mass flow and exit velocity and temperature of the exit using Open source CFD software.

Brief description of my scenario so someone from here can direct the right direction, i don't mind learn other software if OpenFoam doesn't do what I want.

Scenario: Air comes into the compressor, which is housed inside a cowling and the compressor is spinning at very high rpm which is compressing the air. After the air is compress it is shoots out at the back.

Thanks in advance. I you have any input or advice please reply.

Hi Fazlur,

Yes it is possible to simulate this kind of flow with OpenFoam : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDy3pihVyEk

I suggest you to start with incompressible solver pimpleDyMFoam and specially with mixerVesselAMI2D tutorial.

When you are more familiar with OpenFoam and its AMI features, switch to the compressible version of that solver : rhoPimpleDyMFoam.

Good luck !
Regards.
