A little Off-Topic: Tiling Windowmanager
 

Hi,

this isn't really OpenFOAM specific, but may be interesting to some people.

The linux-universe offers a wide variety of windowmanagers, most of them use the stacking approach (windows can/have to be moved around via mouse).

When I work with OpenFOAM I usually end up with a couple of terminals, filemanagers, editors and at least one paraview instance, which I find cumbersome. A tiling windowmanager can help to keep control of your work enviroment.

Personally I use i3 (i3-wm.org), since it works nicely and is easy to configure. But as usual there is a wide array of projects. A good starting point would be here: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=18273

Many thanks for sharing your experience!

I've got a couple of questions for you on this:

1. Are you using an absolute tiling, where all windows are shown in a single workspace desktop, or are you using more than one workspace desktop as well?
   I ask this because from what I've seen in the past, tiling window managers usually use small fonts, which either requires considerably large monitors and/or a very good eye sight.
2. Can you share a screenshot exemplifying what you are seeing in your screen?

1. I use several workspaces. Otherwise I would run out of screen space fairly quickly. But I use several workspaces in Gnome 3, too. Virtual Desktops are the main reason I prefer using Linux for doing actual work. (BTW: If you use Gnome 3, there is an addon called gtile which adds advanced tiling.)
My screens are 22" with 1680x1050, the window titles are not that big, but usually you know the application you are running without looking at the window title.

2. One example would be a pyFoamPlotWatcher.py. You'll end up with the log on the left side and three gnuplot-windows on the right. I'll make a screenshot when I am back at work next week.
