masterthesis Water/Air spray

Hello everyone,

I am new in this forum so let me introduce myself very briefly:

My name is Markus and I am a student in Applied Computional Mechanics.
I am almost finished my studies and now I am looking for a master thesis topic.

Therefore I want to simulate the spray of water atomized with air injectors with OpenFoam. In this case there is one water injector in the middle and four surrounding air injector to atomize the water into spray.

I didnīt applied the master thesis since now and want to know if this problem can be solved with OpenFoam in general and your opinion if this is treatable in half a year with only small experiance with OpenFoam. I did some further CFD simulation with NX Flow and Star ccm+ and theory during study, so there is some knowledge about CFD and sprays in general.

For validation I will do some experiments with a partner company, to get sizes of droplets, velocities and geometrical shape of the spray.

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Tharkus.

It is very difficult to model the primary atomization, i.e., the initial breakup of the liquid core into small droplets.

If you measure the outlet conditions in the injector nozzle (droplet diameter, velocity, temperature, etc), you may try OpenFOAM to model the spray evolution from this point on.

Seems like one of the multiphase solvers could do the job. Have a look the multiphase tutorials cases to look at what is capable.

thx for the first answers.

I heard about that there are different models for first atomization implemented in sprayfoam. I try a closer look at that or maybe change my topic as you said piccinini.

Does anybody has experiance in first atomization modelling of plain jet airblast nozzles?
In fact atomization of plain jet airblast nozzles mainly happens through capillary action ( Rayleigh mode)

Hi,

maybe this is a late reply, but these seem to be interesting: http://computing.ornl.gov/SC10/docum..._Anne_Dord.pdf, http://www.openfoamworkshop.org/6th_...ord_slides.pdf.
