10 years of OpenFOAM

@Paulo: Perhaps they're planning on doing a special release, hence OpenFOAM 2.3.1 not having been released yet? And curiously enough, 2.3 was the last version of Nabla's FOAM edition...

Linux Distributions are now wrapping up their releases for this year, with Ubuntu 14.10 and openSUSE 13.2 recently released; there is also CentOS/RHEL 6.6 and 7.0... and Fedora 21 is in Beta, going as fast as possible towards a release!

With any luck, the upcoming OpenFOAM release will blow our virtual minds! :D

We're still in the first couple of hours of the anniversary of OpenFOAM and the release of OpenFOAM 2.3.1 and here's what I've spotted so far:

1. The website for OpenFOAM.org is now using a green theme, instead of blue.
2. A new twitter account was created specifically for the OpenFOAM Foundation: https://twitter.com/CFDFoundation - it's also shown in the frontpage of the OpenFOAM Foundation website.
3. There is no longer a "commercial link" on the top menu on said OpenFOAM Foundation website for www.openfoam.com
4. Pre-built binaries are currently only available for Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10.
5. In the end of the release notes, there are only 6 people mentioned as being part of the team that developed OpenFOAM 2.3.1, in comparison to 10 for OpenFOAM 2.3.0. In addition, 2.3.0 had an explicit tie to ESI-OpenCFD, and 2.3.1 does not.

OK, this sort of blew my mind... but it also made me feel like we're not doing enough to support the OpenFOAM Foundation.

I thought that the version *.x is more like a dev repository. I knew that its not really a dev repo but more like that. Hmmmm ... now we have a new repo too... I am confused why they publish it.

The ".x" versions are bug fixes made available for each major version. The "-dev" is likely to be a more unstable version, in the sense that it's bleeding edge.

This is only a possibility, a conjecture of mine, but based on what I know as an outside observer of the history of OpenFOAM and the people involved, my guess is that this is essentially what was asked by many in the community several years ago and which only now seems to be becoming true: a development repository where the community can accompany the development of the open source code for OpenFOAM.

As the story goes (as far as I can remember), these "-dev" versions are usually only internally used by OpenCFD and not made available to the general public. This new repository going public is very likely only possible now, because the OpenFOAM Foundation is managing to gradually be taking steps to making OpenFOAM what many want it to be.
