Looking for advice for fluid-structure simulation

Dear OpenFoam users,

Recently, we have a new project and need to calculate the piler's (array of pliers, microfluidics) deformation due to surface tension.

I used to do simulations only for multiphase flow and just consider solid as a rigid solid boundary.

I've never dealt with deformable solid. Can anyone give me some advice?

We'd like to start with some commercial or open-source software.

Can OpenFoam do this kind of simulation? fluid-structure coupling?

Thank you very much guys :)

Have a look at the following link concerning OpenFOAM FSI capabilities:

http://openfoam-extend.sourceforge.n...re_Interaction

https://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/E...re_interaction

In OpenFOAM Extend Project their are several FSI solver like:

icoFsiFoam (incompressible flow & small deformations)

icoFsiElasticNonLinULSolidFoam (incompressible flow & large deformations)

I am not sure about the multiphase capabilities together with FSI!!!

I have been simulating some things using the fsi library in foam-extend 3.1.

It can definitely do multiphase flow but you will have to make add that fluid solver yourself by copying something like interFoam and putting it into that FSI library. They made it nice and modular, I have so far done it successfully with cavitatingFoam.

With interFoam watch out for the diffusive effect at the interface, I'm no expert at this but having seen presentations by the guy who made isoAdvector it seems all the commercial stuff and interFoam-MULES don't do very well, that being said you do have surface tension there so maybe there is no issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv_HIHJ-Xkc

They are working on a release for foam-extend 3.2 I think.

The solvers that you see there form the basic installation have been superseded by this library, you can download it from the extend-bazaar folder in the foam directory, remember it only compiles with foam-extend 3.1 for now
