Dear all,

I am currently evaluating if OpenFOAM could be used to model a project I am working on, but I am not sure if it is the right solution.

First some background information on the case: I need a tool that can model pipe flow for cryogenic substances in three different phases (gaseous, liquid and solid particles) depending on the initial conditions. So sometimes it would be gas/liquid sometimes liquid/solid. It would always be only one species within the pipe.
Additionally I would like to simulate phase changes depending on heat flow into the pipe. However, while 3D would be nice, a 1D simulation would be sufficient for me (and be much faster).

The question I have boils down to: How does the effort to code my own specialized CFD code using a 1D finite volume method from scratch, compare to learning OpenFOAM sufficiently to employ the needed changes to existing solvers?

Background: I have experience working with C++ and Fortran but only limited experience with CFD.

Thanks in advance!
