Hey everyone,

I got a case of a cave system which is omitted to a pressure tunnel. The upper cave is at free surface flow from where the water is going down through my pressure Tunnel to the lower cave system (which is not considered for my case). My plan is to observe the forces induced by the water hammer through closing the outlet. So I would like to use a moving mesh for varying the durations of closing.

So in general I would use interFoam for take the two phases of water and air into account but on the other hand i should use a compressible solver for the calculation of the water hammer effect. For that purpose I would use the SonicLiquidFoam.

Have anyone any idea of how to get both of them together and especially for a kind of beginner in OpenFOAM?

//Edit: I had another look at the solver today and thought about using the compressibleInterDyMFoam. Does anyone have experience with this solver and could validate whether it's a good or a bad choice?

I have been working with compressibleInterFoam and it's a robust solver. The dynamic mesh version should be able to handle your case.

When it comes to waterhammer calculation by means of OF, it is highly recommended to go with sonicLiquidfoam to view oscillations about the pressure (min. and max.).

Trouble about this solver is that it is completely about a laminar instead of turbulent. Nowadays, i have been trying to combine turbulence issues with water hammer in order to observe turbulence during the case. According to my best understanding on that, turbulence shall be analyzed if user wants to have a complete analysis for water hammer. Otherwise, all the data the user have will be laminar flow inside pipeline and also pressure oscillations.

Regarding compressibleInterDyMFoam, to me it would be OK provided that your geometry would easily be drawn on openfoam itself since you can identify which block would move on request etc. If not, i specifically do not have an experience on that.

I will keep you posted here when the thing goes well.
