Modelling across very large altitude scales

I am attempting to model heat-driven convection from the surface which can cause disturbances to vertical velocity significant to about 2-3km altitude, and horizontally across the tens of km. I can't find any similar cases or cases on similar scales so was seeking advice on what solver is appropriate. I have been attempting to use buoyantSimpleFoam and so far no successful executions of code, which could be for a variety of reasons, but hopefully someone can confirm I am on the right path/direct me to a more appropriate solver?

Cheers
