Hello all,

I am using the waves2Foam (r2131) combined with foam-extend-3.1 package to validate overtopping over rubble mound breakwaters. My first part is to validate the incoming surface elevation in front of the structure.

The incoming wave climate is generated with OceanWaves3D, by a steering.wmf file which is obtained from measurements in the laboratory.

To compare I placed wave gauges in the OpenFOAM domain (at the same position as during the measurements) as well as in the OceanWaves3D domain (same position as in the OpenFOAM domain and measurements).

Now comes the issue:

When I run a simulation where I change the startTime in the controlDict file to 1750 seconds (instead of 0s) from the total 1799 seconds to simulate, therefore only running OceanWaves3D, I get the wave signal represented at wave gauge 5 (red, which shows very good comparisons with the incoming measured signal in the laboratory generated with the same paddle file), see attached figure. When instead I start my controlDict file at 0 seconds, interFoam starts immediately and the signal measured in the OceanWaves3D domain is significantly different from the previously mentioned (blue line), therefore underpredicting the incoming measured signal.

So, when only running OceanWaves3D I obtain better results compared to measurements than when I am doing an OpenFOAM-OceanWaves3D simulation from the start, which is quite odd.

Is there something wrong with the coupling between OceanWaves3D and OpenFOAM or is this caused by other problems (which was done by Paulsen through waves2Foam)?

I would gladly hear some solutions!

If any information is missing, this is my first post so just contact me for extra required information to answer.

Regards,

Marco

Hi Marco,

I am also working on the overtopping simulation, have you solved the problem?
