Hello Fellow Foamers,

I am a novice user of OpenFOAM and for my first project I am simulating a VAWT (H-Rotor with 3 blades).

I have executed a couple of simulations for a normal H-Rotor with fixed blades.

Now for the final stage, I would like vary the blade's pitch angle, which is thought as a method to increase the rotor's performance.

The Blades are to be pitched during the revolution when the angle of attack (aoa) exceeds the stall angle which is 10° in my case.

I have tried generating multiple AMIs with snappyHexMesh (1 for the Rotor and 3 for the blades) and implemented the multipleSolidBodyMotion.

The combination of motionFunctions I have tried are rotatingMotion (Rotor) with tabulated6DoFMotion (blades) and rotatingMotion (Rotor) with oscillatingRotatingMotion (blades).

I would appreciate if anyone who has the same/similar experience with such simulations in OpenFOAM to provide their input.

Suggesting a different approach or maybe an improvement to the method I have implemented would be of great help.

Thank you!

Hi Stefano, I have learned it is possible to do with the tabulated6DoF motion possibly also in combination with multimotion.

I am still attempting to get the right setting for this. But I think this is the right method.

Do let me know if you have discovered anything from your side. Thank you

I have a video of a 2D VAWT using blockMesh. Perhaps you can calculate the forces by using function objects in the control dictionary, there you can select the patches. I haven't done this myself, I just have the setup so you can run it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq3gYu-Ffx8
