.dat files Windows vs Linux
 

When I want to open a Tecplot .dat file in Windows and my schools CentOs, I have 3 options of filetype and neither works. However in Ubuntu I have many options and the Tecplot option works perfectly.

Is there an add-on in the Ubuntu version that is not in Windows, and can I add it to the Windows version so they both work as required?

If I try the ParaDIS Tecplot option I get:

There are two possible explanations for the differences you're getting:

1. You might be using two very different versions of ParaView on each machine.
2. The ".dat" file, is it a text file or a binary file? If it's a text file on Linux, then ParaView on Windows might be mistakenly assume it's a binary file. If this is the case, you might want to try an application named "unix2dos".

More possible solutions:

• From the error message, it looks like you're using ParaView 3.98.0 on Windows. Try using ParaView 3.14.1 instead.
• Since it's a Tecplot file, rename the file extension from ".dat" to ".tec".

Thanks for your reply. I have changed the filetype to .tec which works on 3.98.0 64 bit on windows (I havent tried the centos version).

I was running 3.14.1 64bit on windows but upgraded in the hope that my problem was a bug that was rectified. I cant remember what version my university machines are using but Ubuntu is running 3.14.1 64bit.

The .dat file is a text file, but I can open it in notepad and also the Linux machine the file was created on wouldnt open it in paraview. Ive not had a problem with other dat files from linux fluent to windows.

Anyway, it now works great as a .tec so thanks very much!
