Default Too short streamlines in Paraview

Hello,

I would like to create streamlines from results exported from STARCCM+ (polyhedral mesh) using the Ensight Gold format.

Here is a part of this data after the use of an ExtractCellsByRegion filter and exported in VTK format:

The problem is that streamlines are very short (Paraview 4.1.0, 3.98.0 and 3.14.1 on Linux).

In STARCCM+, they are normal.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi William,

Have you tried changing the integrator type in the StreamTracer filter? Check what integrator node is used for creating the streamlines in StarCCM+.

Tip: Once you add the streamlines, you can add the Tube filter in ParaView to view the streamlines much clearly. Streamlines are 1D lines whereas tubes are 2D surfaces around the streamlines. You have a similar option in StarCCM+ as well.

Hello Rahul Thank you for the tubes

Unfortunately, I tried to change everything in the filter properties. It changes always a bit the result, but streamlines are always very shorter than they should.

Okay, here is the solution.

As I though, the problem came from the polyhedral nature of the mesh.

The use of the Tetrahedralize filter allowed to convert it into a tetra mesh, on which the Stream Tracer filter works perfectly.

Yeah I tried this and it worked. Sweet

Btw did you notice the number of cells increase from 15k to 926k. I believe we might have to extract a particular region and then apply tetrahedralize for complex data.

Dear all,

I want to visualize stream lines in Paraview but they are too short. I have tried Tehraherdalize filter as well but they are still short. Actually I think the filter did not work. Anybody has any idea about this problem?

Hi Elham,

Could you be more specific? Could you provide a sample of your data or a figure of your problem? Does your mesh consist of polyhedral cells? Have you tried different settings in the Stream Tracer filter?

Sorry for late reply. My case was in 3D and I firstly created a slice then tried to view the streamlines which caused the short streamlines. Then I tried to view streamlines in 3D which was ok. I still wondering if I could visualize streamlines of a 3D model in a 2D plane?
I also tried to create U_XY=UXi+UYj but I couldn't get what I really wanted.

Hi Elham
Did you figure the too short stuff out? I want a 3D streamline as well, but they are too short. It's a porous media with a area source for seeds. Thank you in advance!

Hello William,

Could you post the screenshot of Tetrahedralize filter treatment? Tetrahedralize filter seems doing nothing on my simulation result

Hi all,

I have not followed this thread for a long time. Now I see that the Elham's problem was maybe that she was trying to generate streamlines on a cut surface.

The problem is that, if the flow has a components being not tangent to the surface, streamlines go outside of it and then disappear.

I personally don't know how to force streamlines to stay confined into a cut surface...

It's nice that you come back. My case is to draw the streamlines in a cube. However, after I set a plane (inlet) as the seed source, the streamline couldn't run through the computational domain. I've tried the Tetrahedralize which you told us, but it seem doing nothing. could you give me a hand?

Hello,

I followed your link but there is no picture visible (unless you give a login and password, maybe).*

The Tetrahedralize filter was needed for me only because I had polyhedrons. If your mesh has only conventional cells (tetra, hexa, pyramids, prisms,etc.) I think this filter cannot help and that the problem is somewhere else...

Since you could specify a custom source, I guess you used the Stream Tracer With Custom Source Filter, right? What if you try the Stream Tracer instead?

It seems not so bad.

Maybe you can play with parameters of the filter to increase the length of streamlines:

Maximum Step Length,
Maximum Steps,
Maximum Streamline Length,
...

Because the StreamTracer could only set point source and line source, so I need the Stream Tracer With Custom Source Filter.

For me, both filters offer similar options (in the "Properties" tab, visible at the left of your screenshot, beside "Information").

I am using Paraview 4.3.1.
