Help with reef3d [Sediment + Topography + STL]

Hi, my name is Vitor and I'm working with reef3d in this year of 2020, and got some questions, maybe someone here can help?

I have one main issue, it is how to use "1. Sediment transport" + "2. Bathymetric data/irregular topography" + "3. Solid structure/STL". I'm doing my experiments by parts, and eventually made a simulation with the first two points sad earlier, sediment transport and irregular bathymetric, but when I try to add and STL it got messy.

In the documentation it got something about how one should use paraview to make the STL from binary to ASCII, I kind of did, but I am not sure that had worked. The DIVEmesh has worked, but it has complained about this point. And after this, I run the reef3d code to see if would word, and does not.

I saw the "setup" made in VTK, and my domain got kind of wrong, it was not anymore my "box" made in the DIVEmesh, but a new one only around my STL-object. I got kind of stuck now...

My main objective is to make some hydraulic structure, something as a weir or so, and se how the waterfall made by this one would react with the bed after it.

I think it is better to go one by one. First, add the STL and run to see if you can get results. It gets a little bit tricky sometimes. Maybe the problem lies with the way you make the STL file. That also happens with OpenFOAM. I suggest using Salome for creating STL files. It is free, and there are online tutorials for it, especially on Youtube. Can be used in both Unix and Windows.
If there were not any problem, add the Topo file, again run it to see if it was added correctly or not. Then see if you can get the sediment transport module running.

I think you should approach codes like REEF3D and SSIIM this way. Step by step. This way, you will learn how they behave in different cases.

Hello Mr. Rad,

Thank you for the response, I kind of got lost in the middle of the way, got to excited. I am still with some difficult to work with the STL, I have created with Blender, going to try with Salome now and see if it works.

Hi vraz,

I have used reef3d in the past but quit later because of the .stl problem. After version ~17 through, imported .stl files are not working properly once before worked.

It may be a compilation related problem on my system but indeed it compiles without error and everything works but the .stl...

As an update,

I have compiled and tested the latest version (21.02) which has been released about a week ago and .stl functions works properly again...

Just wondering, whether STL works for you now with sediment and topography?

I have never used sediment or topo functions yet indeed.
My commnets were related immersed boundary .stl on free surface only...
