when it's hanging: gdb -pid XX

when it's hanging: gdb -pid XXXX

where XXXX is the pid of snappyHexMesh (printed in the header actually)

Inside gdb type 'where' and whatever else you normally do inside a debugger....

Make your surface extend beyon

Make your surface extend beyond the symmetry plane. Does the mesher hang? If so please create a testcase and file a bug report (in OpenFOAM-bugs).
