I think your observations are not out of line....

I think your observations are not out of line. They are pretty much correct. For some cases when matrix sizes are small enough CG based solvers CAN be faster than some multigrid solvers.

There is a confusion. I think you mean to say that you did not observe any efficiency change in CFD solution and NOT the matrix solver.

There are chances that you do not observe efficiency...
