Prism layer collapsing Airfoil blunt edge

1 Attachment(s)
Hello Everyone,

I am trying to do a steady simulation of S805 Airfoil. Whenever I try to generate a prism layer around an airfoil I am getting a prism layer as shown in the image below. I tried to play with a lot of expert properties (i.e Near core aspect ratio, concave angle, convex angle, layer reduction ratio etc.) but no success!
when I reduce the total prism layer thickness below a certain value I am getting a smooth prism layer but when I increase it I am getting a prism layer as shown in the image

Hello,

I am assuming that you are using the Prism Layer Mesher? I used to have the same problems as you.
Try out the Advancing Layer Mesher instead. It maintains a consistent prism layer height.

Hope it works.

Hello D. Lehnardt,

I am using Automated Mesh (2D) for meshing after Badging for create 2D mesh. I don't see an option of Advancing Layer Mesher in Automated Mesh (2D).

So I tried using the Automated Mesh with Advancing Layer Mesher after Badging but the problem is I don't see any prism layer's (I can see prism layer's at planes other than z=0).Also I doing volumetric refinement using various volume sources but I cannot see any refinement either though it takes a lot of time to mesh which implies that it is meshing but I can't see it. I am using Polyhedral Mesh with Advancing Layer Mesher.

Your help will be much appreciated.

Best,
Shadab

How will this affect your simulation results though?

I am simulating a swirler with fine features and I had the same issue. Although I ended up using a very small thickness for the prism layers I am not sure how much it would affect it (I had other issues as well with bigger thickness creating very bad cells).

If you are doing transient simulations you might want to consider either coarsening your mesh after the prisms or reducing the prism thickness cause there you'll have huge CFL number jumps.
