Preprocessor!!!
 

Everybody knows that finite element packages have a very well preprocessor such as Patran (with geometry and mesh capabilities). But most of CFD packages don't have not any capabilties for geometry. CFD packahes have good mesh generator and solvers. We don't have a full CFD package yet.

What is your idea?

What is the best CFD preprocessor at now?

How you can solve your problems when you want to edit geometry?

I really do not know what do you mean. Have you ever tried to work with STAR-CD. If not, you should. Because, there are no problems in editing the mesh even in standard prostar as a preprocesor.

Geometry editing in Prostar and Pro*am is impossible or It is very hard. Do you work with MSC PATRAN? If you work with it you can not say anything about Prostar and Pro*am.

I was working with Prostar, now I'm working with Patran mesher. What do you mean by 'editing the mesh'?

Do you build the mesh in layers and blocks, or do you use automatic meshing?

Prostar has unquestionably different approach to other meshers. You may like it or not, but it is quite powerfull if you get used to it.

You can allways buy better grid generators, then those avalible in CFD packages, as well as you will always get better postprocessing with third party postprocessors then those in CFD package. This is reallity. Welcome :o).

What about StarDesign, CometDesign, StarWorks StarProe ...Have you tried them?

I have worked with Starworks and Pro-surf. I know StarProe and Cometworks too. But I think they are not professional softwares.

Of course Starworks is good software but it isn't complete yet. I tell again that PATRAN is the best preprocessor for finite element users.

Can you tell me, what is StarDesign? I have not any information about it

Do you want us to convert to PATRAN? Where is the temple? I still do miss your point.

If you ask for our opinion, why do you repete all over again that PATRAN is the best? And if it is the best, why do you care about others?

Geometry/surface editing and meshing are 2 distinct operations. How can you complain about STAR-Works or STAR-Pro/E for geometry? You have all the power of either Solidworks or Pro/E to edit your geometry. Both are certainly well regarded professional level solid modelers, at least in their price ranges. Then you tet (for star) or poly (for comet) mesh the solids and run the problem. The current tet mesher is very close in speed and quality to anybody elses. For that matter, why don't you try building a polymesh in patran sometime and see how far you get?

I want to say this point only. CFD packages are not as well as FEM packages yet. Most of FEM softwares are professional at now. I think it is better that some company such as ICEM, FLUENT and STAR-CD joint together and make a good preprocessor and postprocessor. At now cfd solvers and mesh generators (such as ICEMCFD) are strong. But there is not a collection of all. As you know, Ansys and ICEM company try to solve this problem with AIEnviroment software.

I think I got your point, but I think it is very dangerous nonsense. You want big competitors (good in CFD) to join to make one pre- and post-processing software?

Well - I come from the former communistic country - maybe this is the reason why I feel strong aversion to THE ONE, THE BEST. Wait and see what will come from ANSYS and CFX marriage.

Do not forget that the goal of the companies is not to make a good software (it is only questionable by-product) but to make money.
