Moving Mesh

To run a moving mesh do you have to have a fortran compiler?? If you do I do not have access to one, or atleast I am unsure of where to get it at the moment. Also, how do you apply the moving mesh? I believe I have all the time steps initialized, but i'm unsure of how to tell it how my mesh is moving. Thanks for your help.

Re: Moving Mesh

Also, I am attempting to use the NEWXYZ method of a moving grid. I thought that this method did not need a fortran compiler. So, if anyone has an suggestions or help I would be more than happy to accept any help. Thanks.

Re: Moving Mesh

You will always need a fortran compiler for newxyz, as it's a fortran subroutine. But if you can move the mesh with prostar and you are using v3.20 or later then no compiler will be required.

Re: Moving Mesh

would you like to inform me of how to move the mesh? i really need some help. i have talked to the cd adapco ppl and they said the analysis i am doing is rather hard and i am not very experienced at this. so any help is appreciated. thanks.

Re: Moving Mesh

I am running v3.22. i have the load steps in as i mentioned earlier. i am not sure if this is how i tell it to move or what!! also i do not know how to get rid of the other load steps that i do not need. when i tell it to run it says transient load data does not exist. how do i add this to the problem file? or what do i need to tell it that it is there?

Re: Moving Mesh

Well, now when i run after i fixed the problem file i get this error: ? FORTRAN Runtime Error: ? Illegal character in numerical input ? Read(UNIT=8,.....

Does this mean i need a Fortran compiler?? It just confuses me because I do not think i need one, but it asks for one. well, I do appreciate the help and everything.

Re: Moving Mesh

It sounds like you should start again ... something's corrupt in your model. You don't necessarily need load steps to run a moving mesh simulation - they're quite advanced. It all depends on how things change in time (boundary conditions, control parameters). Have you looked at the tutorials? I'd believe what adapco say if they say what you want to do is hard though. What is your application exactly?

i'm just trying to model a heart when it expands and contracts.. thats all.. i have looked at a few of the tutorials that involve the moving mesh.

Re: Moving Mesh

If i change the cell type, is there a way to tell star cd how that moves?? Or is it easier to specify it with other user inputs?

Richard June 17, 2005 03:40

Re: Moving Mesh

If you're modelling a heart, then that really is hard to do. You can model the valves opening and closing (if you want to) in a simple way just as boundaries changing from walls to inlets and back again (the tutorials should help with this); but moving the mesh is hard. You need to deform the mesh (i.e. move the vertices with prostar or newxyz) ... that would be a start. If you can do this without completely sacrificing mesh quality then you don't need to worry about adding or removing cells, or changing cell types.

Re: Moving Mesh

yeah i kinda figured i needed to deform the mesh, but i was unsure of how to achieve this in Star CD. I haven't seen any tutorials that deform the mesh just in star cd. Is there one?? Or maybe you could just say you do this then this, and i probably could get fairly close.

Re: Moving Mesh

Whenever i try to run an analysis using a user subroutine i get this error: /C/PROGRA~1/CDADAP~1/STAR-CD/bin/star: /c//bin/f77: No such file or directory And if i try to make a folder in "bin" called star it says it already exists. Is there a way to specify where the ufile is or does star cd always "think" it is in the same spot.

Re: Moving Mesh

does what i need to put in the ufile in the star cd book?? i'm also not sure about what to put in ufile as far as telling it that the mesh is moving. can someone please help with this?

Is there a way to contract something around a cylinder??

Re: Moving Mesh

David,

There are two ways to move vertices to expand or contract cells: use file cgrd.cgd as in tutorial 11.1 or the user subroutine NEWXYZ. The message you posted earlier about not having such file in /opt/absoft/bin/f77 means you don have a FORTRAN compiler installed (if you want go to ABSOFT homepage and download and install a trial version), so you should use the cgrd.cgd option, as it works from inside PROSTAR and doesn need a compiler. Since you're only expanding and contracting the cells, you dont need to change mesh connectivity and add and remove cells, so it will be a little more straightforward than the tutorial.
