Default CAD+surface mesh->STAR CCM+

Hi all,

Can anyone advise me on a package in which the geometry of a model can be created and its surface meshed with good control under the one roof?

I have tried star design but I cannot get much control over the mesh.

ANSA, as far as I know, only meshes CAD files (all I have is Autocad).

Would pro-am do what I want?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

ANSA has capabilities to create your geometry. You can also create a mesh from scratch in pro-am. I think you would be better off with ANSA, but if you have complicated geometries you will probably need a 3-D CAD program (and someone who can use it). For surface meshing I would choose ANSA.

I use the combination of ThinkDesign as a very powerful and cheap CAD-Program and Prosurf/proam

This is much cheaper than ANSA.

Thanks William and Ralphie,

Just another thing. If I create a surface mesh in STAR DESIGN and then import to STAR CCM+, I'd have better control over my volume meshing.

Is it possible to export a surface mesh from STAR DESIGN?

In a word, yes. You can either export it to prosurf for re-surfacing or the nice people at CDA sent me a small script to spit it out to database file.

The other thing you should think of is that STAR-CCM+ can mesh from any triangulated surface, so if you are exporting from CAD you can export a STL file and go direct to CCM+, you can then use the re-surfacer in CCM+ to prepare a decent triangulated surface for meshing.

Hi Ben,

I just got that small script. Seems I have to open STAR-Design in expert mode. Do you know how that is done?

Thanks in advance
