We have looked at the possibility but we have never tried any chat system. Anyone with experience of what system would be most suitable?

OpenFOAM users have web-based IRC at openfoamwiki.net: http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Special:WebChat

Personally I haven't used it yet, due to various allergies to IRC
Therefore, I don't know what's the level of success there .

edit: vbulletin is a massive world of its own... so I can only guess that vbulletin 4 has AJAX, thus allowing real-time threads/posts?

IRC isn't a private chat. Do you know what IRC channel/network OpenFoamWiki are using?

We actually had an IRC channel on EFNet linked to from CFD Online a long time ago. About 15 years ago I remember that we also had some action there, but it has been dead for many years now and we removed the link a year ago I think.

Concerning vBulletin. Pete is ready with the migration to vBulletin 4, although the LaTeX add-in is not working as well as before. However, vBulletin has started to market their upcoming version 5. We are a bit hesitant if it is smart to move to 4 now when it will soon be replaced. Apparantly 4 was not very successful and many large forums have done as CFD Online and stayed with the 3 version. vBulletin Solution have been working hard on a replacement which is now soon ready for launch. Migrating from both 3 and 4 will require significant work. We haven't decided if we should wait or switch to 4 now. What do you think?

I've seen forums that simply dumped vBulleting and switched to Vanilla or some other forum system. And we have been waiting for v4 for so long, that it doesn't seem to matter if it takes another year or two for either v4 or v5

This is still a relevant question after all these years. Sadly the CAE world still doesn't have a proper chat community. That's why I expanded Elmer's Discord server to host almost all FLOSS and proprietary software out there. There are channels for pretty much everything, namely:
  1. OpenFOAM
  2. Calculix
  3. Code_Aster
  4. ANSYS
  5. FreeCAD
  6. and many others

feel free to join and invite others.
bluebase and kandelabr like this.
