Hi,

I think the OpenFOAM forum (and presumably other forums) suffers from questions which are low quality in terms of various characteristics, e.g. some of them are vague or very broad, some of them miss crucial information to identify a problem, some of them lack information for any reproduction attempts etc. Often, this situation frustrates forum participants who would like to be of help.

Could you please tell me whether it is possible to add a "template" which can guide the inquirer in his/her preparation for questions before he/she hits the "post question" button?

If necessary, I can provide an initial template for the OpenFOAM forum to be reviewed and modified by the community.

Many thanks.

Hello HPE,

I share the sentiment but am wondering if it is worth the effort, given that there are already guidelines in the forum about how to ask questions. Is there a way to make a poll about this?

Cheers, Claudio

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I think most users do not follow the static guidelines, and we both share the same sentiment, I think, because the guidelines do not solve the problem.

I think channelling users into a certain and common structure at the very moment of conveying the question to the forum has high probability to deliver benefits in terms of time spent and communication quality.

That would certainly be the most appropriate moment. What do you propose? Do you envision a template text or a checklist that appears in the text editor when a user clicks on the "New Thread" button?

Yes, exactly. What do you think?

I think, if all agree, a good starting point is to utilise existing templates, such as GitLab has: https://develop.openfoam.com/Develop...estone_id%5D=#

I wonder what the website moderation thinks about this proposal?

Please just see this thread as an example of the problem:

Unacceptable results using multiphaseEulerFoam

Could mods provide some feedback, if possible?

Apologies for asking an utterly basic question, but I see innumerable posts in these forums showing code in nice white boxes that you can scroll.
I have a need to post a reply showing code in this way, but I'll be darned if I can find any format on the attachments format popup window that provides for this. Also I searched the forum FAQs, and looked at length on the internet, but haven't been able to find the key. Can you shed light on this?

If this is what you mean, here's how it's done:

Use the hash "#" button in the message editor (the proper one, not the quick reply one) which will generate two tags where your code should go in between.

The tags are CODE and /CODE both enclosed in square braces.

Hi boffin5,

I feel like this question has been hacked by your new question? Why? (rhetorical question, please don't post an answer)

Please don't do that in other threads in the future. If there is no relevant question or information, ask a new one in the relevant subforum in an isolated manner, so that others can easily find and get benefit from your work in the future. Many thanks for your understanding.

Back to the question at hand: I wonder what the website moderation thinks about the proposal for question templates?
