Dear Admins,

First of all, many thanks for the great work you guys are doing!

Second, and I hate to have to request you guys to add this to your to-do list, but there have been various attachments from the old OpenFOAM forum that have the infamous ".unk" file extension, which some of those old attachments were real pearls of wisdom! And those links have been dead for so long that I don't know when they disappeared. I have the faint idea that they survived the transfer from the old forum to the new one back in March 2009, but I'm not 100% certain.

One example is this thread: http://www.cfd-online.com/Forums/ope...t-compile.html - this particular thread also suffers from a strange post loss: clearly its missing the very first post prior to the one visible. And I clearly remember being able to see the print version of this page where such post was available, but it was probably back when the old forum was still lying around in the server.

So... since you're going to do the super upgrade to the forum, it would be really cool if you could revive those old ".unk" links. I can only hope that you might have an old backup lying around somewhere...

Best regards, many thanks and keep up the good work!
Bruno

Thanks for the bug report. We had forgotten, or perhaps neglected, these old file attachments for the old OpenFOAM Discus system. I have digged out the files from an old archived backup and placed them on the server again. So now also these old attachments should work. However, please remember that the old Discus site had a lot of problems with attachments and there are many attachments missing which were never there.

About the missing posts. When we migrated the old Discus forum there were like 50 messages that for some reason got lost in the migration. However, with several thousand messages properly migrated we decided that that was good enough. I hope that we have not missed something critical. Migrating the entire Discus site into vBulletin was a lot of work. vBulletin provided some help, but Pete had to spend many hours hand-coding migration scripts.

And thank you for reviving the attachments I vaguely remember that files didn't seem to want to be attached...

OK, I'll let you know if I pick up on any that might need some psychic powers . And it's understandable that if some attachments never came to be, then some thread head posts would also get easily misplaced

Ouch! Definitely it does not feel like a very pleasant experience to have to deal with the quirks of a semi-logical forum database

Best regards,
Bruno
