Hi,
I'm studying the simulation between a drone and a small rocket (launcher): two flying bodies separated only by 6 mm.

The drone (carrier) has a trajectory fixed by a table and the rocket has three degrees of freedom (Y, Z motion and X rotation).

Therefore, to study these two movements I think the best method is to use an overset meshing (a background mesh and two overset meshes: one for the carrier and another one for the launcher). Due to the small separation between the two bodies, I need the two overset meshes to be adapted to the bodies profiles, so that both meshes don't overlap one with the other.

I know how to build the overset mesh, but I don't know how to adapt it to the body.

If someone could help me, I would be really really grateful.

If you use a newer version, the overset grids are allowed to overlap.

Yes, I know but I don't have a newer version. I have to work with StarCCM+ version 8.

Well, this will be much, much easier in that version. I'm not sure why you have to use 8, but with the time you'll save fighting the grid, I think it will be very much worth it to upgrade.

If you want to make a body-fitted overset, you can take your geometry into surface repair and offset it normal to the surface. You'll have to clean up that surface (or wrap it), and you can use the output as your overset boundary. This method isn't as robust as just using the newer version, though.

Thank you very much for your explanations. It's true that everything would be easier with a newer version that's why I'm trying to have one licence for the latest version.

Meanwhile, I will try to do some tests with the two bodies separately, each one with its overset mesh. I have created an offset around the body and a background to study the fluid that contains it. When I try to calculate the mesh I find an error (uncontained volume found) I don't know how to solve (attached file).

If someone knows how can I solve this problem, please help me.

Newer versions don't require new licenses, you can just download the new version and use it.

What happens in the mesh at the points it specifies in the error?
