Import geometry or mesh

Hi everyone!

I try to use Star CCM+ after a long time (I used it in school and I have some memories about it). But I can't find how to import a geometry in a step or iges format...!

I go in the file menu then import and I find Surface Mesh, Volume Mesh, CAE Model. I tried CAE Model (even if I think what I need would be CAD, not CAE) and, as expected, stp and iges are not in the list of formats recognized.

Another solution would be to import the mesh. I made a mesh with GMSH but the format seems to be unrecognized by Star CCM+ :
"Import: Unrecognized file format. Can not open file: C:\...\voile.msh"

I hope someone could help me, I don't feel very smart right know... :P

Thank you!

PS : the version I am using is : STAR-CCM+ 9.06.011-R8 for Windows 64

You want the Surface Mesh option. Even though STP and IGS are not mesh formats, STAR-CCM+ will mesh them on import (called "tesselating" the CAD - you can change the setting to fine, coarse, etc but medium often works well). Then, when STAR-CCM+ actually uses the surfaces, it refers to the tesselated mesh, not the underlying CAD.

If you want to import them as CAD surfaces and modify the underlying math, then you can create a new 3D-CAD model. Once open, you can right-click on the 3D-CAD object, select "Import", and bring in the STP/IGS as CAD data which can be modified with some CAD operations. But, most likely you do not want or need to do this, and the above "surface mesh" option is really desired.

That's correct! thank you for your help!

By the way, I have another problem now. I made a simulation and I would like to know the Average speed on a disc. But this disc is in the "middle of nothing".
I tried to make it in "3D-CAD Model" but I can't see it in the geometry scene. And then, I try to create a report "Surface Average". In the part section, I select this disc (Parts>Body2>Surfaces>MyDisc) but when I run the simulation, I only get 0 as value.

I also tried to assign the part as a region. So my disc is know a region. I select "Free Stream" because I don't want it to be a wall. But "Free Stream" seems to impose the direction of the stream to be normal to the surface. With is a problem for me.

I hope this is understandable and somebody has an answer...

Thank you!

I think you need to create a part from your 3D cad model. then, use that part to create an arbitrary plane, with the region of interest as the input part. use this arbitrary plane to create the report.

This is what I was looking for! It was an arbitrary plan...! I think I tried everything else... :P
