how to calculate added mass effect in STAR-CCM+

1 Attachment(s)
Hello all,

I am trying to simulate the Turek& Hron benchmark case in STAR-CCM+. (Please see the attachment) In my simulation, I would like to investigate the added mass effect. However, I am not sure how to do or where to activate the added mass effect option in the software and calculate it. I have looked the old posts but could not find a method for it. Thus, I am wondering does anyone of you have any idea about how to do it?

Many thanks.

Megi

added mass is automatically included when you do any fluid structural interactions in star assuming you set the case up to model the required physics and geometry well. this is because the moving body is going to be displacing and so accelerating the fluid and caused the added mass effect.
it is more work to actually quantify the added mass if this is really needed. one method i have used is to apply a constant acceleration to the body eg from rest and report and monitor the resistance force. also run two or three constant velocity cases then subtract the accelerating force at each of these velocities from the constant velocity force and you have the force component due to acceleration. and from f=ma you have the added mass.

Hi Ping,

Thank you so much. I will try your method.
